Okay what is Plein Aire? Wikipedia describes it thusly " is a French expression which means "in the open air," and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors. I'm pushing the definition a little, a number of these paintings are studio creations of outdoor scenes, but many are done right on location "alla Prima.." meaning done in complete, on site. This Ala Prima lends itself to much more spontanity and expression. Although maybe a little looser, it captures an essence of painting right on site. On the bottom of this page are vacation sketches done on location for you to enjoy. For the sake of minimal carry on, id o these in water color and pen creating a whole different style of work.. This coming spring and summer of 2024 I will be teaching, a foundation in Plein Aire Painting classes (as well as still life and portraits) with the South Shore Art Center.
